53rd ANNUAL ARNOVA CONFERENCE
Dreaming for a Bright Nonprofit Future: Policy Making, Technology, and Collaboration in a Dynamic Environment
November 20, 2024 – November 23, 2024 | The Westin Washington DC Downtown
The 53rd Annual ARNOVA Conference in Washington, D.C. saw attendees from 34 countries and was the first ARNOVA conference for 253 of our 703 attendees! The conference covered a wide scope of topics within philanthropy, through 97 paper sessions, 10 Professional Development Workshops, 22 poster presentations, 36 panels, and 32 colloquia.

The Opening Plenary session brought together leading voices in the nonprofit and public policy space to discuss the strategic roles of nonprofit organizations in influencing and engaging with public policy across different levels of government. The session featured Catherine Herrold (Associate Professor, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University), Cinthia Schuman (Director, Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leaders Program at the Aspen Institute), and Eric Mitchell (Executive Director, Alliance to End Hunger), each offering a unique perspective on how nonprofits navigate, influence, and contribute to policy-making to advance their missions.
During the panel discussion, the speakers explored how the intersections of international, national, and state-level nonprofit policy advocacy can create synergies for systemic change. They discussed the importance of aligning strategies across these levels to maximize impact and the need for nonprofits to navigate the evolving policy landscapes shaped by political polarization and shifting public attitudes. This session provided rich insights for attendees to think strategically about how they can engage in public policy advocacy to achieve their missions and contribute to systemic change

The conference wrapped up its opening day on a high note with the ARNOVA Global Connections" Reception, an evening dedicated to celebrating the international spirit of collaboration that defines ARNOVA.

Following a day and a half of stimulating presentations and panels, attendees gathered for the 2024 Annual Awards Luncheon to recognize the accomplishments of the brilliant scholars and practitioners that we call our colleagues and friends (Meet the winners here). At this year’s Award Luncheon, we also awarded the 2024 Distinguished Achievement and Leadership in Nonprofit and Voluntary Action Research Award to Roseanne Mirabella (read her remarks here).
We honored our retiring board members, Esi Ansah, Cristina Balboa, and Helen Liu for their service, welcomed our president, Chao Guo, and new members, Bok Jeong, Jennifer Madden, and Tamaki Onishi.
Our luncheons, as well as the many receptions and sessions throughout the conference, were made possible by a number of generous sponsors, listed below.
